A bold disruption at a faith gathering sparks seven arrests as police link them to the chaos surrounding former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s visit to Kariobangi North PCEA Church on Sunday, November 30, 2025.
Police spokesperson Michael Muchiri said the seven suspects were traced and apprehended in the Lucky Summer area and are currently in processing ahead of a planned court appearance. Investigators are reviewing both photographic and acoustic evidence, and authorities suggest more arrests may follow as the probe advances.
Public cooperation is being sought, with authorities urging anyone who witnessed the incident—whether through reports, recordings, or other information—to come forward. Tips can be given at the nearest police station, to any officer, or through toll-free lines 999, 112, #FichuaKwaDCI (0800 722 203), and the WhatsApp number 0709 570 000.
Muchiri emphasized that the police service remains dedicated to tackling all forms of criminality firmly and within legal bounds, underscoring that the safety and security of all Kenyans remains a top priority.
Security operations have been intensified around the area as the investigation continues. Gachagua has alleged that the confrontation was intended to punish Kariobangi North residents for opposing the UDA candidate in the ongoing local race. He claimed that police and “goons” fired shots during the clash, injuring two Democratic Change Party (DCP) supporters with gunshot wounds.
Gachagua also alleged tear gas was deployed inside the church compound, jeopardizing clergy, women, and children gathered there, and condemned the incident as a grave violation of a sacred space, calling it “the lowest a leader can go.”
According to a National Police Service (NPS) statement, the episode occurred during a Thanksgiving service for a ward candidate who had recently won a by-election. As the service was drawing to a close, two police officers stationed at the church reportedly observed a large contingent of youths armed with crude weapons attempting to force entry into the compound. The officers notified reinforcements, and a second group soon arrived, seemingly aiming to confront the first group. Police intervened to prevent further escalation, but the clash spilled into the church and temporarily interrupted the service.
Six individuals sustained injuries and were hospitalized for treatment; some remain under care. Residents nearby were overwhelmed by teargas fumes. Police described the disturbance as planned and premeditated.
