The Ashes Test series is heating up, and Australia's team selection for the second Test has everyone on the edge of their seats. With less than a day to go before the first ball is bowled in Brisbane, the Australian camp is keeping their cards close to their chest.
Stand-in captain Steve Smith faced the media with a mysterious air, unable to reveal the starting XI. The big question on everyone's lips: who will replace the injured Usman Khawaja? Josh Inglis, a promising batsman, is in the running for a recall, and Travis Head is expected to open the batting once again, riding high on his Perth heroics.
"There are a lot of options on the table," Smith hinted. "We need to assess the Gabba pitch and then decide on our playing XI. Inglis is an aggressive batsman who impressed on his debut in Sri Lanka. He's in great form and handles fast bowling with ease. If given the chance, he'll be a valuable asset."
But here's where it gets interesting. Beau Webster is also in the mix for a recall at number six, assuming Head opens with Jake Weatherald and Cam Green moves up to five.
And this is the part most people miss... the potential return of Pat Cummins! Smith left the door open for a surprise comeback, stating that Cummins, who missed the first Test due to a back injury, is progressing well and could be a late addition to the team.
"He's been bowling well in the nets, and he knows his body. We'll see how he goes after our assessment of the wicket," Smith said.
A Cummins comeback would mean either Brendan Doggett, the Perth debutant, or veteran spinner Nathan Lyon would have to make way.
When asked about Lyon's place in the team, Smith remained non-committal: "We'll have to wait and see. Nathan has had success at the Gabba, but we'll weigh our options and make a decision based on the conditions."
The final lineup decision could come as late as match day, with play starting at 2 pm local time on Thursday.
So, who do you think will make the cut? And what impact will these changes have on the outcome of the second Ashes Test? Let's discuss in the comments and share our predictions!
