The Arizona Diamondbacks are eyeing a potential move for veteran free agent Carlos Santana, a report by Arizona Sports' John Gambadoro reveals. This development has sparked intrigue among baseball fans, especially given Santana's age and recent performance.
But here's where it gets controversial... Despite Gambadoro's assertion that the Diamondbacks are interested, he also confirms that a deal is not imminent. Arizona is still in talks with other free agent first basemen, indicating a cautious approach.
Santana, a 16-year veteran who will turn 40 in April, had a modest season in 2025, hitting .219 with 11 home runs and 54 RBIs across 124 games. His defensive prowess and clubhouse leadership are highly regarded, with Gambadoro suggesting he could be a positive influence on Ketel Marte.
The Diamondbacks' pursuit of Santana comes after their blockbuster trade for eight-time All-Star Nolan Arenado in January. With Arenado anchoring one corner of the infield, Arizona is now looking to fill the opposite corner, and Santana's experience could be a valuable asset.
And this is the part most people miss... Paul Goldschmidt, a 15-year veteran and former Diamondback, is also in the mix. Goldschmidt brings similar qualities to Santana and has a strong connection with Arenado, having played together in St. Louis and on Team USA.
Pavin Smith is currently Arizona's option at first base, but the addition of either Goldschmidt or Santana would bring veteran leadership and experience to the position.
Santana, an All-Star in 2019 and a Gold Glove winner in 2024, has seen his offensive numbers dip in recent years. His 2025 season saw a significant drop, hitting below .220 with a .633 OPS.
In contrast, Goldschmidt, the 2022 NL MVP and a Gold Glove winner in 2021, had a solid year in 2025, hitting .274 with a .731 OPS.
So, who will the Diamondbacks choose? Will they go for the veteran leadership of Santana or opt for the proven talent of Goldschmidt?
