A powerful earthquake struck southern and central Mexico, interrupting the new year and tragically claiming at least two lives. This seismic event, with a magnitude of 6.5, serves as a stark reminder of nature's unpredictable power. Let's delve into the details of this unfortunate event.
The epicenter of the quake was located near San Marcos, a town in the southern state of Guerrero, close to the popular Pacific coast resort of Acapulco. According to Mexico's national seismological agency, the initial quake was followed by over 500 aftershocks. The constant tremors caused significant disruption and concern.
Reports from the state's civil defense agency indicated multiple landslides around Acapulco and on various highways within the state. Tragically, a 50-year-old woman in a small community near the epicenter lost her life when her home collapsed. Furthermore, a hospital in Chilpancingo, Guerrero's capital, sustained major structural damage, leading to the evacuation of several patients.
Across Mexico City and Acapulco, residents and tourists alike rushed into the streets as the ground began to shake. Sadly, in Mexico City, one person died after experiencing a medical emergency and falling while evacuating a building.
The U.S. Geological Survey provided further insight, stating that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 21.7 miles (35 kilometers), about 2.5 miles north-northwest of Rancho Viejo, Guerrero. This location is nestled in the mountains, approximately 57 miles northeast of Acapulco.
President Claudia Sheinbaum resumed her press briefing shortly after the quake subsided.
Dr. José Raymundo Díaz Taboada, a doctor and human rights defender living near Acapulco, recounted hearing a loud rumble, followed by the neighborhood dogs barking. "In that moment the seismic alert went off on my cellphone," he said, "and then the shaking began to feel strong with a lot of noise."
He noted that the shaking felt less intense than in previous earthquakes, and he was prepared with a backpack of essentials, ready for any aftershocks. He also mentioned that he was unable to contact some friends living along the Costa Chica southeast of Acapulco due to communication disruptions. This highlights the critical importance of emergency preparedness and effective communication during natural disasters.
But here's where it gets controversial... Do you think the government's response was adequate? What measures could be implemented to improve disaster preparedness and response in these regions? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
