The music industry is facing a crisis as electronic music artists, producers, and songwriters are losing out on millions of pounds in the UK due to wrongly allocated royalties. According to new research, only 28% of the fees paid by UK nightclubs are being distributed correctly to artists, resulting in over £5.7 million a year being misallocated by performing rights organizations. This imbalance is particularly affecting artists in genres like R&B, rap, and metal, as well as independent and underground artists. The issue stems from the lack of detailed tracklist information for DJ sets, leading to inaccurate royalty distribution. While rights organizations express confidence in their methods, Fair Play estimates that 50% of these payments are inaccurate. The problem is exacerbated by the age-old architecture of collective management organizations and the industry's focus on bands and artists performing their own songs. This has led to a lawsuit between artists and the UK's biggest performing rights society, PRS for Music, over unfair terms. The solution lies in getting DJs to file accurate tracklists with performing rights societies, which results in 95% payment accuracy. However, only 5% of DJs in the UK do this regularly, highlighting the need for reform in the industry.
