EPFO Portal: Transfer Your PF Balance in 2 Easy Steps (2026)

The EPFO portal has recently undergone a significant transformation, offering salaried employees a streamlined process to transfer their EPF balance from previous employers to their current accounts. This new feature aims to simplify the transfer process, reduce paperwork, and consolidate retirement savings without causing procedural delays. The portal's revamp comes after a major database consolidation and software upgrade, which caused a temporary downtime. While services are now operational, EPFO warns that PF claims and other service requests may experience delays during the normalization period.

The transfer process is now available through two methods. First, employees can initiate a transfer request through the 'Request for Transfer of Account' section, available under the 'Online Services' tab. This option allows for a seamless transfer process. Alternatively, the 'Member Service History' section provides a comprehensive view of past and current employment details, including pending EPF transfer claims. If no claims are pending, the status is marked as 'no', and employees can make the 'Service Transfer Claim' through Form 13 by clicking the 'Claim' link.

To apply for the transfer, employees must log in to the EPFO member portal using their Universal Account Number (UAN). They will then be redirected to the 'Online Service/Transfer Request' page, where they can enter their previous employer's Member ID and other required details. An OTP will be sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile number for verification and submission of the request. The portal then displays the details of the present establishment into which the transfer will be affected, ensuring accuracy.

EPF, or the Employees' Provident Fund, is a government-backed savings scheme designed to provide financial security to salaried employees post-retirement. Both the employee and employer contribute 12% of the employee's basic salary and dearness allowances towards EPF. The contribution is capped at ₹1,800 for both parties, although they can choose to contribute more voluntarily. The EPF interest rate for FY 2025-26 is 8.25% per annum, reviewed and calculated monthly, but credited annually.

EPF account transfer is crucial for salaried employees as it increases their total service history, benefiting them during withdrawals. The EPFO highlights four key advantages: consolidation of PF balances for higher payouts, avoidance of TDS on final settlement, higher pension eligibility, and better insurance coverage up to ₹7 lakh. However, the EPFO portal upgrade may cause delays, as the process is expected to take up to two weeks to normalize.

In conclusion, the EPFO portal's new feature simplifies the EPF balance transfer process, offering salaried employees a convenient way to manage their retirement savings. While the portal upgrade may cause temporary delays, the long-term benefits of EPF account transfer are significant, providing financial security and increased service history for employees.
