Fast forward to the present, and JR has left his unique mark on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, an iconic train renowned for its opulence.
In 2024, JR unveiled his masterpiece, "L'Observatoire," a breathtaking renovation of an early 1900s train carriage. Commissioned by Belmond, a leading travel company, this private suite has become the crown jewel of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, offering routes across Europe, including the iconic Paris-Istanbul journey.
The addition of "L'Observatoire" has elevated the train's luxury to new heights. A one-night stay in this carriage starts at a whopping $80,000, but guests are treated to an extraordinary experience. JR describes it as "an apartment on wheels," complete with a bedroom, lounge, private dining area, bathroom, library, and tea room.
JR was given full creative freedom to redesign the 23-meter-long former sleeping car. The results are nothing short of spectacular. A high-sided bathtub takes center stage in one room, while an electric fireplace adds ambiance to the circular library. The bedroom features a unique round skylight, reminiscent of a camera lens.
But here's where it gets controversial... JR's explanation for his early graffiti days is intriguing. He claims that trains offered him a way to bring art to places he had never been. "The real luxury here is not the leather bench or the curtains - it's time. Your time on the train. That's something we all need," he reflected.
While "L'Observatoire" may be a luxury beyond the reach of many, JR believes that dreams are essential. "We need to have those things that, even if we never get to experience them, we know they exist."
As JR concludes, "It's always moving to come back inside, knowing it's traveling all around the world. Sometimes I'm on it, and sometimes I'm like everyone else - dreaming about it."
