A Grinch-like Move: Gas Prices Spike in Vernon
Imagine waking up on New Year's Eve, ready to embrace 2025 with optimism, only to be greeted by a rude awakening at the gas pump. Vernon's gas stations decided to ring in the new year with a price hike, increasing petrol costs by a substantial 11 cents per litre. This move, reminiscent of the Grinch's antics, left many motorists feeling a little less cheerful.
But here's where it gets controversial: while the Grinch waited until after Christmas, these gas stations didn't even give us a few days of post-holiday cheer. The price increase took effect on December 31st, ending a brief period of relatively affordable gas prices in the region.
For a few glorious days, gas prices hovered around 120.9 cents per litre, a welcome sight for many. But this bubble burst on New Year's Eve, with prices skyrocketing to 131.9 cents per litre. According to gasbuddy.com, as of 2:20 p.m. on December 31st, the Super Save station on 27th Street was a rare exception, offering gas at 118.9 cents per litre. However, most stations had already hiked their prices, leaving motorists with few options.
The impact of this price hike was felt across the region. In Salmon Arm, for the first time in a while, gas prices surpassed the $1 per litre mark, with several stations charging 99.9 cents per litre. Unfortunately, at least two stations in Vernon decided to go even higher, pricing their gas at 131.9 cents per litre. Kelowna and Penticton followed suit, with most stations in those areas also charging 131.9 cents per litre. Kamloops drivers, already known for paying the highest prices in the region, saw an increase to 136.9 cents per litre.
And this is the part most people miss: while Vernon's prices are high, they're not the highest. Gas in the Vancouver area is a whopping 144.9 cents per litre, while Calgary drivers are enjoying a relatively lower price of 118.9 cents per litre. So, while Vernon residents might feel the pinch, they're not alone in this gas-price struggle.
