Big news for Chicago! Google is making a massive investment in the city's iconic Thompson Center, and it's going to be a game-changer. An $85 million permit has been issued for interior renovations, signaling Google's commitment to creating a stunning new headquarters. This project goes beyond just a fresh coat of paint; it's a complete transformation. But here's where it gets exciting...
The permit, officially dated December 17th, names Google as the owner of the building, a significant shift from previous permits that listed The Prime Group under JRTC Holdings LLC as the developer. This is a clear indication of Google's long-term vision for the space.
While Clark Construction handles the exterior revamp, Skender is the general contractor for the interior work. Scott R. Becker of partners by Design is listed as the architect of record.
The renovation work detailed in the permit covers the first nine floors, including the lower level. It encompasses a central kitchen and bike storage, a new tenant lobby and entrance on the first floor, and the build-out of office space on floors three through nine. Plans also include a cafe, food hall, and restaurant on the third and eighth floors, lab space on the fourth floor, and open conference spaces on floors three, five, six, seven, and nine. This indicates that we can expect further permits to cover the upper floors of the 17-story building.
The exterior is also progressing rapidly. The new bird-friendly glass is nearly complete on all levels, except for a few spots. This glass will not only improve the building's aesthetics but also allow for more efficient heating and cooling, making the Thompson Center a more sustainable building.
And this is the part most people miss... Google plans to consolidate all its Chicago employees into this revitalized Thompson Center space this year. Currently, they occupy offices at 1000 West Fulton and 210 North Carpenter Street. This move represents a significant investment in the city's downtown core.
The project also includes renovations to the Clark/Lake CTA train platform, which connects directly to the Thompson Center. The State/Lake platform is also closed for complete reconstruction.
