A thrilling new chapter awaits Harry Cobden, as he embarks on a remarkable journey as the retained jockey for the renowned JP McManus from the upcoming season. This is a golden opportunity that Cobden is eager to grasp, and one that he believes will propel his career to new heights.
The role encompasses riding all the 'green and gold' horses, both in the UK and Ireland, including some of the sport's most prestigious champions. Think Inothewayurthinkin, the reigning Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup champion, and Fact To File, the winner of the Ryanair Chase. In England, Cobden will also be riding The New Lion, a contender for the Unibet Champion Hurdle, and Jonbon, a top two-mile chaser.
Speaking from Hereford on Sky Sports Racing, Cobden expressed his excitement and gratitude for this opportunity. "It's a massive step forward for my career, and I'm incredibly grateful to be given this chance. It's a privilege to be asked, and I'm looking forward to riding some fantastic horses."
But here's where it gets interesting. The chance to ride the McManus horses in Ireland was a significant factor in Cobden's decision. "Ireland is where the heart of the green and gold operation lies. There's an abundance of quality horses there, and it's an exciting prospect."
Before he begins this new chapter, Cobden is determined to finish his time as stable jockey to Paul Nicholls on a high note. "I've been with Paul for a significant part of my career, and I owe him a lot. The support I've received from him and his owners has been incredible. Without that, an opportunity like this might never have arisen."
Cobden continued, "I want to thank Paul and his team for everything. I've had an amazing ten years with them, and I hope to continue riding winners for them until the end of the season. My focus now is to give it my all and ride as many winners as possible for Paul's horses."
Barry Geraghty, McManus' last retained rider before his retirement six years ago, believes Cobden is the perfect fit for the role. "It's an incredible opportunity, and there's an incredible depth of quality within the stable. From last season's Gold Cup and Ryanair winners to a host of talented novices, there's a lot to look forward to."
Geraghty added, "When I spoke to JP, it was an honor to be offered the chance to work for him. I was in a different position, as it allowed me to ride more back in Ireland. But for Harry, it's a massive opportunity, and I'm sure he'll make the most of it. Riding in Ireland and Britain will be a new challenge, but he's more than capable. His style of riding is well-suited to JP's preferences, and he's a brilliant all-rounder like Mark Walsh."
"Mark has achieved so much for JP, and Harry will be looking to follow in his footsteps. When you take on a big role like this, there's internal pressure, but you soon realize you're working for someone who understands the sport inside out. JP takes the pressure off, and that's a great environment to work in."
So, what do you think? Is Harry Cobden the right choice for JP McManus? Will he live up to the expectations and follow in the footsteps of Geraghty and Walsh? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
