Bold opening: A big commitment seals Kiefer Sherwood to the San Jose Sharks for the next five seasons, spreading hope across the locker room and fan base alike.
Kiefer Sherwood has agreed to a five-year contract worth $28.75 million with the San Jose Sharks, a deal that kicks in next season and carries an average annual value of $5.75 million.
The 30-year-old forward has tallied 25 points this season (18 goals, seven assists) across 49 games for the Sharks and Vancouver Canucks, including two points (one goal, one assist) in five games since the Sharks acquired him from Vancouver in a January 19 trade.
Sherwood was finishing the second year of a two-year contract worth $3 million ($1.5 million AAV) with the Canucks, signed on July 1, 2024. He would have become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 had he not re-signed.
"We are very excited to have Kiefer remain in San Jose and be part of the group that we are building," Sharks general manager Mike Grier said. "The ingredients he brings to our lineup on a nightly basis blend extremely well with the skillsets of his teammates, and we look forward to his contributions in the years to come."
The Sharks sit at 30-25-4 and are pursuing their first playoff berth since the 2018-19 season. They trail the Seattle Kraken by three points for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference, with one game in hand. San Jose has back-to-back home games coming up on Friday against the St. Louis Blues and Saturday against the New York Islanders.
Sherwood entered the NHL as an undrafted free agent with the Anaheim Ducks on March 20, 2018. In his career, he has accumulated 123 points (61 goals, 62 assists) over 314 regular-season games with the Ducks, Colorado Avalanche, Nashville Predators, Canucks, and Sharks, along with two points (one goal, one assist) in eight Stanley Cup Playoff games. Some fans may question whether this long-term deal aligns with the Sharks’ playoff timeline, while others will see it as a stabilizing move to maintain depth and versatility.
