Get ready for a major upgrade on the London Overground! A bold new vision is set to revolutionize your daily commute.
From next year, the London Overground will undergo a significant transformation with a change in management. FirstGroup has been awarded the concession to run this vital transport network, promising an array of improvements.
The Overground operates under a unique concession model, where TfL (Transport for London) retains control over fares, rolling stock, and service levels. This system has seen the Overground evolve from its inception in 2007, when it was managed by Laing Rail and MTR, to its current operator, Arriva Rail London, who took over in 2016.
First Rail London (FRLL), a subsidiary of FirstGroup PLC, will take the reins from May next year, with an eight-year contract that could extend to a decade. This new partnership aims to bring a range of changes, some evolutionary and some revolutionary.
One of the most notable changes will be the introduction of extra peak-time trains on the Mildmay line from May 2026. This will include shuttle services between Clapham Junction and Shepherd's Bush during peak hours, utilizing a nearby crossover on the railway to ensure efficient operations. Additionally, targeted infrastructure upgrades will enhance the performance of the Mildmay line.
But here's where it gets controversial... From December 2026, an ongoing signaling upgrade will enable a significant increase in train frequency on the Windrush line. Services through the core section, stretching from Dalston Junction to Surrey Quays, will boost to an impressive 18 trains per hour. And this is the part most people miss - there's an expectation that this frequency could further increase to a whopping 24 trains per hour in the future!
Furthermore, digital screens will be expanded across all operator-managed stations, providing live travel updates and information on nearby interchange services, such as buses.
