The Star of Bethlehem: Fact, Fiction, or a Near-Miss Comet? For centuries, the celestial enigma of the Star of Bethlehem has captivated theologians, astronomers, and anyone who has ever gazed up at the night sky. Was it a divine miracle, a poetic metaphor, or something far more scientifically explainable? Now, a NASA scientist believes he's cracked the code, offering a fascinating new perspective on this ancient mystery.
In the Gospel of Matthew, the star's movements are quite peculiar. It first appears “in the east,” then “goes before” the wise men on their journey from Jerusalem to Bethlehem, finally “standing over” the place where Jesus was born. But here's where it gets controversial: ordinary astronomical objects don't typically behave this way, leading many to dismiss the star as either a miracle or a symbolic representation.
Mark Matney, a planetary scientist at NASA, proposes a compelling alternative in the Journal of the British Astronomical Association. He revisits a long-suspected culprit: a comet observed by Chinese astronomers around 5 BC. Ancient Chinese court records, meticulously kept for astrological purposes, documented a bright comet visible for over 70 days in the spring of that year. Historians generally place Jesus's birth between 6 BC and 5 BC, adding further weight to this theory.
Matney's innovative approach involves modeling the comet's potential trajectories as seen from Earth. He discovered that specific paths could have brought the comet close enough to our planet that its eastward motion would have nearly counteracted Earth's rotation for a few hours. Today, satellite engineers recognize this as “temporary geosynchronous motion.” To those on the ground, the comet might have seemed to pause in the sky, almost directly overhead, before resuming its journey.
For one possible scenario, this would have occurred on a June morning in 5 BC. From Judea, the comet's position would have aligned with the road from Jerusalem to Bethlehem while ascending in the sky. Travelers heading south toward Bethlehem could plausibly have witnessed it “going before” them and then lingering overhead as they arrived.
Matney's research suggests, “This is the first astronomical candidate for the Star ever identified that could have had apparent motion corresponding to the description in Matthew, where the Star ‘went before’ the Magi on their journey to Bethlehem until it ‘stood over’ where the child Jesus was.”
The comet would have had to pass remarkably close by astronomical standards: between 236,000 and 249,000 miles (380,000-400,000km) from Earth, roughly the distance to the Moon. Matney cites the example of the Siding Spring comet, which passed within 87,000 miles (141,000km) of Mars in 2014 — a third of the Moon–Earth distance. “While rare, such close approaches are possible,” he writes.
A comet visible for months aligns with Matthew's hints that the “star” had been observed for a considerable time. Moreover, comets held significant meaning in the ancient world. In Greco-Roman and Eastern astrology, they were interpreted as harbingers of change, royal births, and divine intervention. A prominent comet could have easily inspired a journey for a team of elite astrologers.
But, is this the definitive answer? Absolutely not. At least 400 scholarly attempts have been made to unravel the star's mystery, and alternative explanations exist. Johannes Kepler, the 17th-century astronomer, favored a conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in 7 BC. Others have suggested a supernova, an exploding star. Many, however, continue to view it as a miracle or a myth.
