The AI Bubble Debate: Nvidia's Results Spark Market Optimism

European markets opened with a positive outlook on Thursday, driven by Nvidia's impressive earnings report. This development has eased investor concerns about the much-discussed AI bubble.

The pan-European Stoxx 600 index surged by 1% during early trading, with most sectors and bourses experiencing gains. Notably, AI-related stocks, including Dutch semiconductor companies BESI and ASMI, witnessed notable upticks, with increases of over 3% and 2%, respectively. ASML, another Dutch firm specializing in semiconductor equipment, also joined the upward trend, rising by 2.1%.

Nvidia's third-quarter results, released after the market close on Wednesday, exceeded revenue forecasts and provided an optimistic outlook for the fourth quarter. The chipmaker reported a substantial year-over-year revenue jump of 62% to $57.01 billion and projected revenue of $65 billion for the upcoming quarter.

Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, addressed the AI bubble concerns during the earnings call, stating, "From our perspective, we see something entirely different." This statement has sparked a lively debate among investors.

In Asia, the positive sentiment extended to chip stocks, with Samsung Electronics and Hon Hai Precision Industry leading the regional indexes higher. Additionally, stock futures in the U.S. also gained overnight, propelled by Nvidia's strong performance.

Ben Barringer, the global head of technology research at Quilter Cheviot, emphasized the dual relief brought by Nvidia. He highlighted the company's success in surpassing gross margin expectations, a critical factor for semiconductor stocks, and its direct addressal of market concerns during the earnings call. Barringer noted, "They systematically addressed and refuted many of the bearish arguments. They discussed scaling laws, various demand elements, not just hyperscaler capex, but also the model demand from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, software demand, and enterprise demand."

In other news, investors are monitoring defense-linked stocks after Europe's Aerospace and Defense Index hit a two-month low on Wednesday, closing the day approximately 1.9% lower. This movement coincides with the arrival of senior U.S. officials from the Pentagon in Ukraine to work on a peace plan. The index rebounded on Thursday, gaining 1.34%.

Meanwhile, British favorite Greggs saw its shares dip by 0.3% after Robert Moorhead, the ex-finance chief of WH Smith, withdrew from an anticipated board position at the fast food and bakery chain. This development follows an accounting probe into WH Smith, leading to the resignation of its Chief Executive, Carl Cowling, late on Wednesday. Shares in the retailer were last seen at 0.84%.

As the earnings season winds down, Europe experiences a quieter day. However, investors may turn their attention to Walmart, which is expected to release its results before the U.S. markets open.

Additionally, Europe's data organization, Eurostat, is set to release GDP and employment breakdowns by industry for 2024, providing valuable insights into the region's economic landscape.

And here's where it gets interesting: data released on Wednesday indicated that the UK's annual inflation rate retreated to 3.6% in October, increasing the likelihood of a December rate cut by the Bank of England. This development comes a week before the government's highly anticipated Autumn Budget. The British pound remained relatively stable against the U.S. dollar overnight.
