A powerful movement for environmental and cultural preservation is celebrating a significant milestone, but it's a bittersweet occasion. The Protect Kahoolawe movement, which began 50 years ago, has left an indelible mark on Hawaii's history.
On January 4, 1976, a group of brave activists, led by Walter Ritte, embarked on a mission to stop the military's bombing of Kahoolawe, an island that had been used as a target range for decades. This act of defiance sparked a movement that would change the course of Hawaii's future.
But here's where it gets controversial... While the movement successfully ended the island's use for target practice, it came at a devastating cost. Two of the group's members, George Helm and Kimo Mitchell, disappeared at sea during the struggle. Their sacrifice and the legacy they left behind were honored during a commemorative event on Maui.
The Protect Kahoolawe Ohana, a group that continues the work of the original nine, has been instrumental in restoration efforts. They've brought thousands of people to the island, engaging in cultural and environmental preservation activities. Kauluponookaleilehua Luuwai, a member of the Ohana, emphasized the importance of holding the military accountable for the devastation caused by their training activities.
To mark this 50th anniversary, the Ohana has adopted the proverb "La'a, Ma'a, Pa'a." This saying encapsulates the revival of Kahoolawe's sacredness, the renaissance of Hawaiian culture, and the commitment to aloha aina, a deep love and respect for the land and oceans.
Kaipulaumakaniolono Baker, another Ohana member, beautifully articulated this sentiment: "To sincerely love, respect, and care for our islands is our duty."
The legacy of the Protect Kahoolawe movement continues to inspire younger activists, who are joining forces with veterans like Walter Ritte in other critical battles. Ritte emphasizes the need for young people to protect Mauna Kea from the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope and to defend the Kamehameha Schools, Hawaii's best education system, from attacks.
