Superman Director James Gunn Confirms Wonder Woman's Absence in 'Man of Tomorrow' (2026)

The DC Universe is getting a brand new Wonder Woman, but the burning question is: when will we actually meet her? With James Gunn's highly anticipated "Superman" follow-up, "Man of Tomorrow," on the horizon for next year, speculation has been running wild about Diana Prince's potential debut. And now, Gunn himself has stepped in to clear the air!

James Gunn, who's not only directing "Man of Tomorrow" but also co-heading DC Studios, has a knack for getting ahead of the rumor mill. He's known for debunking false claims, much like he did with the Hulk's appearance in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2." This time, he's directly addressed the Wonder Woman buzz surrounding "Man of Tomorrow." When a fan asked on Threads if Wonder Woman would be in the film, Gunn's answer was a straightforward, "No." He explained that while they are indeed casting a female character for "Man of Tomorrow," his best guess is that "scoopers" are simply making an educated guess that it's Wonder Woman.

Furthermore, Gunn put a definitive stop to rumors about recent auditions for both Batman and Wonder Woman, stating clearly, "No. All these rumors of Batman and Wonder Woman auditions are false." So, the speculation can officially be put to rest for now!

While details about "Man of Tomorrow" are still under wraps, we do know that Lars Eidinger will be stepping into the villainous shoes of Brainiac. David Corenswet is set to return as Superman, and Nicholas Hoult will reprise his role as Lex Luthor. The plot is expected to see these two iconic characters teaming up to face the formidable threat of Brainiac. While other cast members from "Superman" are anticipated to return, don't expect to see a new Wonder Woman among them.

But here's where it gets a little nuanced: Gunn didn't explicitly state that Wonder Woman won't appear in "Man of Tomorrow" at all. He clarified that no one has auditioned for her, and the current female role being cast is not Wonder Woman. So, while he's made it pretty clear it's not happening yet, the door isn't entirely shut on a future appearance.

We know that a new "Wonder Woman" movie is in the works, with Ana Nogueira reportedly writing the script. However, with James Gunn's commitment to ensuring scripts are absolutely perfect before giving projects the green light, it's highly improbable that the casting process for Wonder Woman has even begun.

What is confirmed is that "Wonder Woman 3," which would have starred Gal Gadot, is no longer happening, a fact solidified in 2023. Gal Gadot, who previously portrayed the Amazonian princess in films like "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," "Wonder Woman," "Wonder Woman 1984," and "Justice League," will not be reprising her role. James Gunn and Peter Safran are ushering in a full reboot of the DCU, meaning most of the core actors from the DCEU (often referred to as the Snyderverse) will be recast. This also means we won't be seeing Ben Affleck as Batman again, and Robert Pattinson's Batman from his standalone universe will not be transitioning into this new DCU.

And this is the part most people miss: It doesn't mean familiar faces are out entirely! Jason Momoa, who previously played Aquaman, is now set to portray Lobo in "Supergirl." Gunn recently gave us a fantastic glimpse of Momoa as Lobo in action. So, who's to say Gal Gadot couldn't portray a different character within the DC Comics canon down the line? However, when it comes to Wonder Woman, a new actress will undoubtedly take on the iconic role at some point. As for who that will be? It seems we'll have to wait a good while to find out.

Mark your calendars! "Man of Tomorrow" is scheduled to fly into theaters on July 9, 2027.
