The Total Lunar Eclipse of 2026: A Blood Moon Spectacle
The skywatchers across North America were treated to a breathtaking display of nature's wonders as the total lunar eclipse unfolded. While the main event, totality, has concluded, the memories of this celestial spectacle will linger. The Earth's shadow cast a dramatic transformation upon the full moon, turning it into a mesmerizing blood moon, and the first images are already captivating audiences.
The internet is abuzz with stunning visuals of the partial and blood moon phases, captured by photographers in America and Oceania. One of the earliest images, taken by Mirko Harnisch and the Dunedin Astronomical Society, showcases the full moon during the partial eclipse phase over New Zealand. This photo was snapped just as the Earth's inner shadow began its slow journey across the lunar disk, darkening the western lunar seas. The sunlight, filtered by the Earth's atmosphere, transformed the Worm Moon into a dramatic blood moon, as seen from New Zealand. Time and Date's mobile observatory in Yucca Valley, California, offered another stunning perspective, with the outlines of the lunar seas darkening the crimson orb as it drifted silently behind the Earth, hidden from the sun.
