This announcement comes alongside the revelation that the Twins have been allocated a pool of $7,357,100 for international signings this year, which ranks as the third-largest allocation in the league. Merlo, now standing at an impressive 6-foot-1, has been consistently developing his physique, garnering attention from scouts who have noted his remarkable strength improvements over the past year and a half. He is recognized as a versatile player with a well-rounded skill set, showcasing impressive exit velocities from both sides of the plate. Hailing from Maracay, he is learning to better leverage his swing, which is increasingly helping him access his emerging power potential.
On the defensive side, scouts are confident in Merlo's ability to secure a position in the middle of the infield. Given the fierce competition for shortstop positions, especially at the lower levels of play, there is a possibility that he may transition to second base while still maintaining an above-average defensive performance. His agility shines through when turning double plays, as he demonstrates quick footwork both defensively and on the bases.
The Twins proudly welcome Merlo into their 2026 international signing cohort, which also includes several other promising talents: Daiyer Barboza, Juan Germosen, Frederick Hiciano, Yael Retituyo, Adrián Martinez, Jeremy Jimenez, Jhon Gonzalez, Anibal Beltré, Abel Sosa, Sebastian Echavarría, Juan Collado, and Luis Duarte, among others.
Moreover, the club is set to add another exciting prospect this year: Juan Diego Holmann, the standout shortstop from Nicaragua. Holmann stands out not only because of his extensive international experience—having represented Germany in the U15 Euro Baseball Championships in both 2021 and 2023, where he achieved a commendable 7-for-20 record over seven games—but also due to his recent playing time with Indios del Bóer in the Nicaraguan Professional Baseball League. International players are eligible to sign with Major League teams between January 15 and December 15 each year. To qualify, they must be at least 16 years old by the time of signing and turn 17 before September 1 of the following year. This means that players born between September 1, 2008, and August 31, 2009, are eligible to sign during this current signing period. Furthermore, players must be registered with Major League Baseball prior to being eligible to sign.
